BASIC PROCESS PRINCIPLESThe characteristics of the flow of solid materials are relevant to many process industries, particularly in handling powders, pellets, crystals and aggregates. The Armfield Solids Handling Study Bench comprises a variety of items each of which introduces a different aspect of solids behaviour.
• A bench mounted steel tube framework with laminate platform and
backboard onto which are assembled the items listed:
- Cylindrical hopper, capacity 2.5 litres with four discharge orifices and
rapid acting valve
- Transparent horizontal angle of repose cylinder with protractor
- A 'V ' cone shaped solid mixing vessel, capacity 1.2 litres with variable
speed motor, range 0 - 42rpm
- A variable speed ball mill,capacity 5 litres, speed range 0 - 42rpm with
various sizes of porcelain balls
- Glass cyclone, inlet dia 11mm and pneumatic conveyor with air compressor
and transparent line, dia 10mm
- Balance
• Controls for the motor drives to the ball mill and mixer are on the backboard.
• A variable intensity vibratory shaker and a set of six sieves with BS 410 screens, mesh size within range 0.25 - 2mm, are also supplied.

The Armfield Solids Handling Study Bench consists of items which are designed to introduce students to different aspects of solids behaviour. Demonstrations may be undertaken separately over a series of laboratory periods.
The following items are included:
> Sieves and Vibratory Shaker
> Cylindrical Hopper
> Horizontal Cylinder
> Solids Mixing Vessel
> Ball Mill
> Cyclone and Pneumatic Conveyor
As students operate the various items they study and understand a wide range of characteristics of solids behaviour:
> use statistical techniques to characterise size distribution, under and oversize fractions and to relate sieving efficiency to screen size progressions, vibration time, sieve loading etc.
> use the cylindrical hopper to measure solids discharge rates and relate to initial load and hopper exit orifice size
> use the horizontal cylinder to determine basic bulk solids parameters of density and angle of repose
> undertake batch mixing studies and sampling
> observe the comminution history of granular solids processed through the ball mill, followed by size analysis
> demonstrate and observe particle transport, conveying and subsequent cyclone action
