INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES
• An aeronautical axial flow gas turbine engine mounted on a test bed with full instrumentation and sensors suitable for teaching purposes.
• The engine is easy to start, without the need for a compressed air supply or an alternative starting fuel.
• All start and engine switches are located in an electrical enclosure with a guard to prevent accidental starting.
• The unit is supplied with a 24V aircraft battery and a 30 litre steel fuel tank with internal rubber bladder. The engine, battery and fuel systems are mounted on a welded and painted frame.
• The equipment is supplied with educational software, data logging
and graph plotting facility.

tests have taken place for type approval
The engine is a small compact free turbine engine model number JFS100, comprising a centrifugal compressor, annular combustion chamber and an axial flow turbine.
The engine has been modified from its original purpose as a gas turbine engine starter by removing the power recovery turbine and gear reduction unit and replacing them with a custom fabricated exhaust nozzle. The fuel control unit has been modified to allow for control of engine rpm by a Vernier throttle control.
The engine is military surplus with a 200 hour maintenance inspection performed.
The engine is very easy to start direct from the control panel. There is no requirement for compressed air supply or any other alternative starting fuel to be used.
The engine is supplied complete with ignition system, fuel system and pump,
lubrication pump, oil cooler, generator and battery.

Compressor Type: Single stage radial outflow
Turbine Type: Single stage axial flow
Engine RPM: 70,000 rpm typical
Engine Mount: Two 20mm polished steel rods via
4 linear ball bearing, allowing a direct thrust reading to be obtained by
a load cell
The data display and acquisition system require a PC running Windows 98 or Windows 2000 and incorporating a USB interface. (Computer not supplied).
Sensors are provided to measure thrust (direct from a load cell), fuel flow, engine rpm pressure at various stages of the engine and temperature at each stage of the engine.
The data from these sensors is passed to the PC on the USB interface and may be displayed using the software provided. The software estimates the thrust from the fuel flow, temperature and pressure readings using the Brayton cycle formulae. This can be compared with the measured thrust.
The user has access to a wide range of data acquisition, graph plotting and display functions. As well as the standard graph plotting functions, a special routine has been written to display H - S diagrams (Entropy - Enthalpy diagrams) which are of particular interest in thermodynamics. Full help text is included on both the operation of the equipment and the theoretical background.
The package also includes a software driver to allow the equipment to be interfaced to software produced by the user, for example in Labview or C.
It is recommended that the engine test stand be installed in a dedicated test cell, fitted with air extraction and sound deadening. The control console and computer can then be installed in an adjacent area.
To facilitate this, a throttle cable length of 5 metres is provided as standard. For different throttle cable lengths please contact Armfield.
