Offers
economical miniature-scale aseptic
processing and packaging
The new Armfield FT83 Sterile
Filling System is an economical
and simple way of preparing sterile package
samples with an excellent shelf life. When combined with an Armfield UHT unit
such as the FT74X or FT94X it can form
part of a complete miniature-scale aseptic
production line.
The unit comprises a laminar flow cabinet
offering a filling environment to US Federal
Standard 209E Class 100 which meets microbiological
safety and pharmaceutical production/filling
requirements. The unit offers a controlled clean environment
and allows all the product paths to be
sterilised for the filling to be controlled
in a simple way.

Armfield announce the new FT94X HTST/UHT Mini Pilot systemwhich extends the
range of continuous operation scaled-down units offered by Armfield to
200
L/h (30-100 L/h standard format).
The unit combines full flexibility – plate and tubular heat exchanger
options - with comprehensive instrumentation demanded of research and
development
equipment.
The FT94 is designed for operation as both a stand-alone unit
and also for seamless integration into a full processing system with the
capability of aseptic packaging of processed product.
The FT94 is powered by steam; product
is pre-heated by a steam-heated water
circuit to prevent heat shock. Product
main heating is by steam through the
heat exchanger surface. Both product
pre-heat and heating temperatures are
automatically controlled and set points
are defined by the user. The FT94 incorporates
full CIP and SIP functions.

Two in-line homogeniser sub-systems, the FT90 and FT91 are complete in-line homogenisation sub-systems
for use with Armfield miniature scale food processing equipment.
The FT90
is based on an APV 1000 homogeniser and the FT91 is based on a Niro Twin
Panda. Both homogenisers have been specifically optimised for this application.
The
units include controls, comprehensive instrumentation, valves, pipework,
pulsation dampers, datalogging and all facilities required for operation
and process integration with other Armfield equipment.
Also used on the Armfield miniature
scale aseptic processing line.

Complete miniature-scale aseptic
filling line now available
A
complete miniature-scale aseptic processing
and packaging system capable of replicating
the manufacturing process is now available
from Armfield.
The system, recently installed in the
research and development department
of a major European food manufacturer,
enables very small quantities of product
(5 liter batches at flow rates of 10-20
l/h) to be processed and filled aseptically
to sterile packaging. Processing of
all stages is continuous and steady-state
conditions are reached and maintained
in a matter of seconds.
The system enables users to produce
samples with very similar physico-chemical
properties to the industrial scale.
Since the unit is capable of producing
a sterile packaged product, it is possible
to store samples for long term trials.
The system comprises three elements:
a direct steam injection HTST/UHT
unit,
an optional homogenizer and the FT83
Sterile Filling System. The
entire system is sterilized and cleaned
in place for efficient operation with
both processes being PLC monitored
and controlled. The sterilization
process
is completed rapidly, and cleaning
likewise, meaning that the system
can be turned
around quickly.
Once the system is sterilized then any
number of products can be processed
aseptically without the need to re-sterilize.
Should the product hold temperature
fall during operation, product is automatically
diverted from the system until the required
hold temperature is restored. This prevents
possible contamination of the sterile
system.
The UHT system pre-heats the product
indirectly prior to direct steam injection
to product hold temperatures of up to
150 degrees C. Instantaneous product
cooling and evaporation of condensed
steam occurs in the expansion vessel
of the direct steam injection unit.
Product is further cooled indirectly
through a tubular heat exchanger.
Product may be homogenized at either
the pre-heat or the indirect cooling
stages using an aseptic two-stage homogenizer
capable of pressures up to 1000 bar.
Cooled product is then pumped to the
Asepto-Fill for sterile filling. The
Asepto-Fill is a sophisticated hand-in-glove,
sealed cabinet system with a recirculated,
HEPA filtered air supply. Nitrogen can
also be supplied to the unit for low-oxygen
headspace filling.
Any type of sterilized or irradiated
packaging can be used within the Asepto-Fill
cabinet.
The system is capable of a wide range
of processing conditions to suit particular
products and processing strategies.
