BASIC PROCESS
PRINCIPLES – CE Series |
Fluid
Mixing Studies - CEK
Liquid mixing apparatus has been developed
to demonstrate the factors affecting mixing
using visualisation and measurement techniques
as appropriate.
|
|
Fixed and Fluidised Bed Apparatus - CEL
This unit facilitates the study of flow
through both fixed and fluidised beds
of solid particles. Simultaneous study
of air and water systems demonstrates
the differences between 'aggregative'
and 'particulate' fluidised bed characteristics
and the important phenomenon of 'bubbling'
can be observed.
|
|
Solids Handling Study Bench - CEN
Comprises a variety of items each of
which introduces a different aspect of
solids behaviour. Equipment includes sieves,
shaker, hopper, ball mill, cyclone and
pneumatic conveyor.
|
|
Corrosion Studies Kit - CEQ
Designed to demonstrate how potentially
corrosive situations may be recognised
and avoided. The equipment allows for
the simultaneous study of up to eight
corrosion cells. Each cell allows for
the immersion of three similar test specimens.
|
|
Chemical Reactors Training Equipment -
CEX series
This range of small scale chemical reactors
has four units representing the types
found in industry. Three are mounted on
a common bench top service unit (CEX)
while the fourth has a dedicated unit.
A data logger (IFD3) allows graphic displays
using Windows operating system.
|
The reactors are:
* Continuous stirred tank - CEM Mkll
* Tubular - CET Mkll
* Batch - CEB Mkll
* Stirred tank in series - CEP Mkll |
Mass Transfer and Diffusion Coefficients
- CERa & b
Two separate items of laboratory equipment
have been designed to allow measurement
of molecular diffusitives and, in doing
so, to familiarise students with the basic
notions of mass transfer theory.
The gaseous diffusivity appartus involves
diffusion with bulk flow, whilst the liquid
diffusivity appartus relates to equi-molal
counter-diffusion. (A process data logger
for IBM-PC (or similar) is available for
the Liquid Diffusion Coefficients Apparatus).
|
|
Wetted Wall Gas Absorption Column - CES
The absorption studied is that of oxygen
from air into deoxygenated water, which
is produced by sparging the water with
nitrogen in a deoxygenating column. This
is an example of absorbtion which is liquid-film
controlled; the liquid film mass transfer
coefficient can be determined at various
mass flow rates of the water.
|
|
Packed Bed Chemical and Biological Reactor
Using Sugar Inversion Reaction - CEU
CEU enables the study of packed bed chemical
and biological reactor performance using
the sugar inversion reaction (sucrose>glucose+fructose).
The unit joins the Armfield range for
studying chemical reaction engineering
and mass transfer.

HEAT
& MASS TRANSFER UNIT OPERATIONS –
UOP Series |
Distillation Columns - UOP3CC and UOP3BM
Two new laboratory scale distillation
columns allow safe, operation of a real
industrial process. A continuous distillation
column which also performs batch experiments,
can be controlled manually or externally
by an industrial PIC or PID controller.
A batch only version is available for
teaching the fundamentals of distillation.
|
|
Solid/liquid Extractor - UOP4Mkll
* Teaches fundamentals of the process
* Uses techniques found in industrial
units
* Computer compatible with optional interface
and software
* Multiple stage
* Continuous or batch operation
|
|
Liquid-Liquid Extraction Unit - UOP5
This unit provides an introduction to
the operation of an industrial type of
liquid-liquid extraction system.
A vertical column is used to contact
two essentially immiscible liquids flowing
counter-currently and may be operated
continuously or batchwise. A distillation
column is incorporated for solvent recovery
or extracted product concentration.
|
|
Basic Water Cooling Tower - UOP6
This bench mounted unit offers a self-contained
facility for demonstrating forced draught
cooling. Five different types of column
are included. These can be quickly interchanged
without the need for tools.

Basic Water Cooling Tower - UOP6

facility for demonstrating forced draught
cooling. Five different types of column
are included. These can be quickly interchanged
without the need for tools.
|
|
Gas Absorption Column - UOP7
A pilot scale apparatus enables familiarity
with the characteristics of packed tower
hydrodynamics and absorption processes.
|
|
Tray Drier - UOP8
This small pilot-scale tray drier is
designed for laboratory training programmes.
Operating conditions may be varied in
a way that provides data demonstrating
both theoretical and practical aspects
of industrial drying practice.
|
|
Laboratory Steam Generator - UOP1O
An advanced boiler for providing steam
at suitable pressures and capacities for
the laboratory. It is self-contained,
requiring only connection to electrical
and water supplies.
|
|
Filtration Unit - UOP12
UOP12 filtration unit allows students
to study filtration, a unit operation
employed throughout the processing industries.
Batch filtration is demonstrated using
a fully functional and highly visible
plate and frame filter unit . As an option,
continuous, tangential flow filtration
can be examined using a hollow fibre filter
cartridge. Both filter units are widely
used in industry.
The UOP12 forms part of the Armfield
range of unit operation in chemical engineering.
|
|
Crystallisation Unit - UOP14
Crystallisation is a valuable process
in chemical engineering where the separation
of one or more of the components from
a liquid mixture is required. The Armfield
UOP14 demonstrates this process in the
laboratory so that students may gain a
thorough understanding of this industrial
technique. The UOP14 system demonstrates
an industrially important type of crystallisation,
namely solution cooling crystallisation.
|
|
Fixed
Bed Adsorption Unit - UOP15
UOP15 demonstrates the adsorption
of a solute, carbon dioxide, from a
binary gas mixture onto the surface
of a solid adsorbent, activated carbon.
The process takes place in a fixed
bed adsorption column. The adsorption
and desorption/regeneration processes
are monitored using temperature sensors
sited at intervals along the column
and also by carbon dioxide measurement
of the exit gas using an infra red
(IR) detector.
|
|
Modular Evaporator Family - UOP20
A modular system for teaching evaporators
in chemical engineering. With different
modules a wide range of configurations
can be made.
* Rising or falling film, rising and
falling film
* Optional steam or pressurised hot water
configuration
* Easily linked to a PC running Windows
* Software covers set up, demonstrations
and results analysis
|
|
Armfield
Software
Armfield equipment can usually be connected
to a PC running Windows via an interface
device. The software is designed to run
exclusively on Armfield machines and is
aimed at allowing students and teachers
to get the maximum benefit from time spent
in the laboratory.
